SETTING SUBMISSIONS

SETTING SUBMISSIONS
Kenos is stronger and more diverse with your character in it, both the Meridian and the Zenith deeply appreciate your character's willing cooperation! There's nothing fishy sounding about this. Likewise, the game is greater with everyone's imagination, and that's the purpose of this page: for approval and tracking of player-made additions to the setting at large.

Thought up of a cute neighbor for your character, or a gossiping shopkeeper who can't stop talking smack about Shard Bearers? Need to channel your OOC thirst into a civilian who will ICly send anonymous letters of admiration to characters you want to harass fancy? Or maybe your character built a dog park because they just love dogs so much, you don't understand, or by some great stroke of fortune, they came across the greatest [redacted] dealer by a hole-in-the-wall in Springstar that's eluded the watchful gaze of the Helios' Legionary? Sharing is caring, as the saying goes: if it sounds fun and it's not lore breaking, why not make it a part of Kenos? Detail the basic information for your lovingly crafted NPC or location here, and who knows, maybe another player would be interested in fleshing them out further and give them a bigger part in enriching more characters' stories on Kenos!

Player setting submission may be made for NPCs and locations for the time being, more options may become available in the future. Please keep things vague and easy to interact with, locations containing items of significance linked to a character's home world would not be acceptable unless it is the result to a token regain/AC reward (i.e. a field of flowers from a species that only exist in a certain canon). Upon approval, we'll leave a comment and let you know!

GUIDELINES

Should you wish to contribute to the setting or add some flavor to it one way or another, here are some basic guidelines to help you stretch your creative juices!
  • You are free to create townies, business owners, etc without approval.
  • Named NPC’s require a check-in with loremasters but aren’t off-limits within reason if you’d like to handwave an interaction or use them to facilitate basic CR in some way.
  • Locations outside of Heliopolis and Yima’s manor are free game for creation (keeping in theme with each city’s vibe). Springstar in particular is a good place to create spaces since it hosts a wide array of styles and purposes, so you can’t really “go wrong” throwing something in there! Highstorm is more "high brow," but you are more than welcome to create for either.
  • The only hard limitations would be in regards to anything obviously game-breaking (ie: defying the power cap, subverting established lore, etc). If you're on the fence about your subject, feel free to ask first!
  • If you want to submit an idea for a temporary world for Starlight Park in Springstar, go for it! Those can go to the Event & Player Plot post anytime.
  • If you create a venue or NPC, it would be nice to toss them here for cross-reference or so other people can use them!

Name: BREAD
Function: A bakery that sells bread.
Location: Highstorm
Details: An extremely straightforward open-air bakery that factually proclaims BREAD above its well-lit wares. As the store's name might suggest, the offerings are very simple, but they're regularly fresh, tasty, and warm to the touch. The baker is a quiet, bearlike person who dwarfs his apron and barely fits through the door. However, he is tolerant and kind in an inscrutable way. In truth, he only started baking once the previous baker, his wife, became too unwell to work.
Etc.: purely submitting this because Gray will be working here for November and I want her to wear a cute apron... but then she's running off to Springstar, rip

LOCATION

Name: Punch Drunk
Function: A bar. Get some drinks, get some food, have a good time.
Location: Springstar’s Psychagogía district
Details: A new bar opened up in the bustling entertainment district by Vander in collaboration with a local Meri. Come take a seat at the counter or grab a spot at one of the tables and enjoy the jovial and (somewhat) rustic atmosphere. If you’d prefer something a little more quiet, there is a balcony upstairs with a few tables available where you can sit and enjoy the sights of the streets away from the crowd.
They’ve got drinks on offer sourced from both Springstar and Highstorm, and a modest selection of typical bar-fare snacks should you walk in with an appetite. And if you’re looking for something a little more under the table, well. Vander just might have you covered.
Etc.: Please feel free to use Vander’s bar as a backdrop any time you’d like. You’re more than welcome to handwave Vander’s presence for background stuff (he’ll be very welcoming and friendly) or Tam’s (see below). If there is any sort of notable commotion or happenings while you’re there, please drop a note about it under this post in Vander’s inbox just so I’ll have an idea of what he should be aware of! ❤
Also! If you’ve any interest in having Vander obtain some less-than-legal items (something to sate a particular vice, magical contraband, etc) for you or you otherwise want to get involved with something like that, shoot me a message! Vander’s getting set up with smugglers down in Kowloon and I’d love to get others in on that as well.

NPC

Name: Tam
Appearance: A local Meri who appears to be somewhere in his early 20’s. Broad-shouldered and of a moderate height, he has black hair, golden eyes, pointed ears, and a swarthy complexion. He generally keeps his hair pulled back in a tight braid and maintains a meticulous chinstrap beard. Wears half-rimmed glasses most of the time, and his apparel is generally a bit on the formal side of casual.
Location: Springstar, Punch Drunk
Details: Tam’s a young man who’s determined to prove himself as a successful business owner, but lacked in experience to get anything off the ground. Got involved in this joint venture with Vander to learn from his experience. Tends to try a little too hard at projecting a laid-back attitude, but he means well. He’s got a terrible sense of humor and will probably tell you at least one bad joke if you chat him up for any length of time.
Etc.: Tam is mainly the background NPC here at the bar who focuses mostly on the administrative side, but will help out in the bar itself anytime Vander’s off or preoccupied with other stuff outside of it.

Name: The Last Dance ( Ο Τελευταίος Χορός )

Function: An underground arts venue and performance space for bohemians and hedonists.

Location: The upper reaches of the Below, Springstar.

Details: The Last Dance is an underground arts venue and performance space that sprawls throughout the Below. Trim and streamlined, it is a darkly colorful and evocative space that inhabits several intersecting alleyways, providing both a comforting density and a claustrophobic atmosphere. Every alleyway appears to have a different theme, different parties or events happening, but all are connected as one under the banner of the Last Dance. Inspired by the Old Vic Tunnels, bazaars and underground artistry.

Function: A manga and book café that also doubles as a small publishing house.
Location: Akadimaïkós District. map location
Details: A modest two-story building with bookshelves lining every wall, along with several cozy reading nooks and a lounge area, as well as counter space and a fridge for those who'd like to purchase food off the menu (ramen, popcorn, pastries, coffee, soda, and also dried squid). The second floor has another reading area as well as an office and meeting room, both of which have the business hours of the Publisher/Editor-in-Chief inscribed on the door.

Name: help it's Amos' business and he literally wouldn't name it. it's just there. i guess informally it would end up being called Amos' or something but no official name
Function: A machine/repair shop! So basically like. Do you need something fixed. Your local friendly mechanic/rocket scientist will fix it.
Location: The first storey of Amos' house in Highstorm.
Details: Think the Kenosian-equivalent of a modern day machine shop, complete with multiple workstations and ongoing projects, which are generally made up of the most advanced (and most easily accessible) tech possible in Kenos. The first room you'd enter would be a waiting area/lobby with a couple of couches to sit but no real receptionist or anything, but one of those little bells on the door that would signal your entrance. Beyond that is an open concept space filled with projects that is pretty much always organized and impeccably spotless, with a couple of rooms off to the side for projects that might require a little more privacy (whether by request or if it's more dangerous than normal, whichever). And also a bathroom for customers! How thoughtful.
Etc.: Since it's at Amos' house there's a set of stairs leading to the second storey where he actually lives, so it would be strongly advised nobody actually goes up there without invitation (because really that would be just rude). Also since it's right next to the bathhouses people can feel free to go there while they wait for him to fix whatever it is they've brought him if it's a project that's only gonna take part of a day. Amos has picked up a bit of mending magic but he's also a mechanic/rocket scientist by trade via canon so he knows what he's doing. Feel free to use this as an excuse for IC contact as well!

Name: xananióno ("rejuvenation" in greek), often shortened to "xanan."
Function: a small public bathhouse.
Location: psychagogía.
Details: tucked away in the corner of psychagogía and adjacent to the park lies xananióno, a lavishly decorated bathhouse compound. it features two square baths per room each with a different quality to the water: one room holds a sudsy bath filled with towering bubbles and a mud bath whose soil is imported from beneath the tree of life. the other room holds a cold bath chilled by frost spells and a hot bath that is the most typical and most popular choice. it is usually dimly lit by lanterns as the business has no windows; the indoor air quality is made dismal by strong herbal scents. outside, its courtyard grows a large, thick-trunked olive tree, whose fruits are often served to guests on floating trays. alcohol can be purchased, as well as select herbal "medications" that are also commonly featured in their spa services.
Etc.: the owner is known as "hoya" and they do not speak. all that is known about them is that they often give discounts to male members of helios' legionary.

Name: The Burning Garden ( In Hayame's honor! )
Function: Repurposed base, currently used as a sanctuary for foreign creatures and research laboratory.
Location: The Below
Details: WE ARE NOT CALLING IT ZOOWLOON HURRAH!!!!

After claiming Aetós's former outpost for themselves, the majority of Shard-bearers involved in Vander's rescue came to the conclusion that the animals within could not be recklessly slaughtered, nor immediately released into the environment of Kenos. A triumvirate head of elected(?) directors — John Gaius, Akua Sahelian and Bondrewd — agreed to take on the task of monitoring the outpost, researching the creatures within and assessing them for compatibility with Kenos's natural environment and continuing to examine the outpost and abandoned materials for further information regarding Aetós, their goals and their methodology.

The overarching theme of the Burning Garden is a slowburn plot of Good Intentions Gone wrong, where the overseers and all invested Shard-bearers present and future will come to utilize the creatures in further experimentation as the Blight becomes a larger, more impactful problem. Possible options for people to jump in on this from either side: a) people can help take this nefarious plot down; or b) continue to help with the experimentations, etc. for science.

While largely structured as a large maze, some player-generated locations include:

  • A large, fairly barren room that looks like it might be used for observations considering the barricaded landing on the second floor. It gives the vibe of being an arena of sorts, though it's in disrepair to be used for cage matches. It was likely instead used to pit the creatures against each other for Aetos's purposes. [ Here. ]
  • The holding pens account for a number of species, including terrestrial, aquatic and aerial creatures that might have been pulled from their native worlds. A large water-filled tank, a mesh birdcage and numerous pens with heavy steel doors are some of the environments that the creatures have been cooped up in.
  • A network of laboratories relating to anatomical dissection and examination, largely barren of record and information, but decently equipped. [ Here, Here, Here & Here ]
  • And a lot of leftover traps, Problems and general tomfoolery to continue to clear out.

Name: NIKEA
Function: Giant furniture and home decor retailer
Location: Springstar's Empório District
Details: This enormous, warehouse-like store is a one-stop shop for all your home decor and furnishing needs! Bearing a strong resemblance to a certain Earth chain of stores, NIKEA sells a wide variety of ready-to-assemble furniture to suit the diverse styles and needs of Springstar's many inhabitants. In addition to furniture, the store also sells appliances, decorations, other home furnishings, and even food and fun knickknacks to perk up the weary wanderers to traverse its endless aisles.
Etc.: NIKEA's mascot is Karcharías, a friendly-looking anthropomorphized shark dressed in a toga. Supposedly the mascot was originally based off a real resident of Springstar, though that individual has long since passed on.

Details:
"Near the Antiques and Baubles Market (on the opposite side of Benny's) is a small shop illuminated by candlelight. If the owner is there the door will be open and you'll be allowed to browse the shelves of samples. Everything is clearly labeled what it is, but the price goes unlisted. While there is a large array of salves, balms, potions, and perfumes, you may have been told the owner is well versed in both custom and "unique" concoctions — if you're willing to pay the price."

LOCATION
Name: The Church of the Key
Function: A DnD-type temple dedicated to Abadar, the god of law, cities, commerce, and wealth. Offers church services, magic/blessings, and also storage space in a rentable vault.
Location: Alenroux, near Hayame’s home

Details: Founded shortly before the Repose, the Church of the Key is a stone church that serves the needs of the Alenroux community, providing residents with a local place of worship and multi-purpose community services. In addition to all the things one might expect from a parish church, the temple also provides some magical services like blessings and healing, and also lends out money and rents space in its vault. The entire church interior is permanently illuminated and warded from magical travel thanks to a hallow effect laid over the area, and though that fact is not advertised, it certainly contributes to the vault’s spotless record for resisting break-ins.

As servants of the Wealthy Father, the church’s clergy provide community guidance and assistance in a few specific ways that go beyond the duties of caring for a temple. The senior clergy are well-versed in both the workings of the law and the various branches of Alenroux’s government, and can provide advice in these topics, or even provide legal representation. While the church doesn’t offer pro-bono work, all of its services, from legal advice to moneylending to spellcasting, are fairly and affordably priced.

Due to the church’s sturdy construction and hallowed interior, it is also known as a safe place to seek refuge during Alenroux’s long nights.

Etc.: Abadar’s faith is recognized by its symbol, a stylized key typically represented in gold, though silver is sometimes seen as well. Traditional dress for the clergy includes vestments of spotless white, trimmed with yellow or gold to represent the wealth over which the god presides.

NPC
Name: Father Thengill
Appearance: A dwarf of advancing middle years, showing in the lines of his face and in his dark, greying hair. He is typically seen in gold-trimmed white vestments, and decorates his long, braided beard with golden thread.
Location: The Church of the Key, in Alenroux

Details: Father Thengill has been a part of the church since its very founding, in the weeks before the Repose began. After Liem fell into a deep slumber, the charismatic dwarf worked hard to keep the church running according to Liem’s vision, and he was eventually elected as the church’s new head after it became clear to the acolytes that the founder was not going to awaken any time soon. While not actually ordained by any existing senior member of the church, Father Thengill has the magic ability that one might expect from a senior priest of Abadar, and the few living people to recall his promotion are happy to assume that Abadar made an exception for him given the circumstances.

After more than a century of leadership, Father Thengill has become the trusted face of Abadar’s church, having helped it grow and earn a respected place at the heart of the local community. He has a friendly, paternal manner that lends itself well to giving advice and sermons about community-building. Now that Liem has finally awoken from his long sleep, the dwarf is technically no longer the community’s most senior priest, but his long-term presence means he has a closer relationship with the locals than Liem does, and the clergy are used to deferring to him.

Etc.: Father Thengill can be found presiding over any area of the church, but is often in either the chapel or in his office, providing more business-oriented services. He is at least partly responsible for the popularity of beards among the more masculine-presenting members of the clergy, which seem to make up the majority of the priesthood.
