Byleth | Fire Emblem: Three Hopes

Character Name(s): Byleth Eisner
Series: Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes
Wiki Link: Here

THE GOOD

How far would they go to accomplish their goals or fulfil their desires? Do they have lines they wouldn't cross?

Byleth's red lines are betrayal, senseless killing or killing someone in an unnecessarily cruel and painful way. Otherwise he would do whatever he needs to to achieve his goals, and can be ruthlessly pragmatic about it as well. Being a mercenary, he is more about victory and survival over honour.

Additionally, he has a rather... interesting approach to who he helps in battle: he states in Three Hopes that he learned to disregard those deemed 'a lost cause', so that he can focus on those whose survival is assured. Since it's implied he's been serving as a mercenary since he was in his early teens at least, it's likely this was a coping mechanism he developed to better process the many, many, many battles and people he's killed throughout his life (and those he was unable to save).

So, it does mean that the moment he registers at someone as being 'a lost cause', he won't go out of his way to help or connect with them. They're basically a non-entity. Perfectly healthy way of dealing with things...

Update 26/06: Recent events now have Byleth considering what it is he really wants and how he'd accomplish whatever it is he decides on. He's also slowly beginning to realise that his earlier habit of attributing something as a 'lost cause' isn't really a sustainable way of doing things when you're not a wandering mercenary with barely any roots. He's stuck in Kenos, for better or worse, and he can't keep drifting along hoping blind obedience to Meridian's orders will get him back home. He's gotta - gasp - find his own way.

This does mean Byleth's at his most conflicted right now...

What is something they treasure?

Jeralt. His father for the longest time has been the only one to truly understand him, and see beyond his 'emotionless façade'. To put it simply, Byleth is a daddy's boy, and if you take the route in Three Hopes where Shez kills Jeralt, Byleth uh, well, to say he doesn't take it well is putting it very mildly, let's just leave it at that.

It does mean he has a very strong, borderline co-dependant relationship with Jeralt. He loves him with every fibre of his being, but it means he's got a massive weak point in his mental/emotional health whenever Jeralt's safety is threatened. In Three Houses, he had developed a support network within the Monastery to weather Jeralt's inevitable death, in Three Hopes, he has no one but Jeralt.

However, his time in Kenos has started to let him open up and connect with other people: especially Claude, who he's starting to become deeply attached to. Following the Rube Goldberg machine that is Byleth's logic processing, he's likely going to start aligning his opinions and interests according to Claude's preferences, like he did with Jeralt, because again, Byleth's approach to things is soooooo healthy (no).

Update 26/06: Jeralt is still Byleth's most treasured person, and Claude is beginning to influence Byleth in both good and bad ways, because of Claude managing to elbow his way to the near top there. HOWEVER. Byleth is also beginning to treasure other things than putting all of his mental eggs in one frayed basket: novels. He's discovering the joy of putting pen to paper and writing the happy endings he wants for himself and those around him. They're terribly written and amateurish, but it makes him happy, and he treasures most of the happy endings he makes, even if they are 'fictional'.

What do they consider to be their best or most positive qualities?

Their combat ability. Byleth is a powerful warrior, and he knows he's powerful - but not to the point of arrogance. Put him on a battlefield, and he'll be able to concoct a suitable plan with the assets available to him and bring to bear the muscle needed to get through it. He's aware of his limits, though - he freely confesses that he still can't defeat Jeralt in a spar, and genuinely praises people who get one up on him in battle.

Jeralt would probably say his best quality is his blunt sincerity. Byleth can't lie or deceive his way through an open door.

Update 26/06: A quality that two people (Set and Claude) have identified in him is also his gentleness and kindness. Buried underneath all the pragmatism and poor coping mechanisms from a lifetime of battle, Byleth is a gentle soul, though he finds it hard to see it in himself. He can be pretty hard on himself in general, and even says he's well-suited to a time spent in war, since it's all he's good at. But, if Set and Claude say he's gentle and kind, then, well, maybe that can be one of his qualities alongside his combat skills.

What is this character's best memory?

During Three Hopes, probably managing to make friends with his peers for the first time. Outside of Three Hopes, likely it would've been a memory from childhood and would involve Jeralt in some way. His father has always been in his life, protecting him and loving him unconditionally, despite all the various oddities Byleth had. Even Jeralt admitted in his journal that Byleth was a strange and creepy child, but he loved him regardless - hell, this man burned down part of a church to fake his kid's death to get him away from Rhea, who committed horrible experiments on Byleth as a baby in an attempt to make him the perfect vessel for Sothis, which, uh, she succeeded in doing...

Update 26/06: He now has a contender for best memory, though: that being his 'blind date' with Claude at the Masquerade. It's something he does think fondly of, especially as he figured out who exactly his 'date' had been. The whole thing was platonic, but Byleth was still happy to experience a date for the first time.

Is there anyone they have highly positive feelings towards?

I'M LIKE A BROKEN RECORD I'M SORRY but Jeralt the Bladebreaker, his father.

As stated above, though, he's getting deeply attached to Claude, and Dimitri is a close second. Without Jeralt around, he's starting to lean on those two because they're both familiar, even if they come from the Bad Timeline (in his opinion), and because Byleth's two states are 0 or 1000, his positive feelings for them are shooting right up to the max there.

Update 26/06: BIGGEST SIGH. He's also becoming very attached to Set because of multiple reasons: one, the guy didn't even know him that well and said to his face that there was nothing wrong with him and he wasn't a heartless person. Two, Byleth can sense that Set's hurting somehow, and he's always empathetic to such things. Three, Set is a god that Byleth feels comfortable in asking advice from regarding sort of god things (thanks Sothis). THESE THREE TERRIBLE COMBINATIONS mean Byleth has a blind spot the exact shape and size of Set and he's made it his life's mission to fulfil his promise to Set to "give him a happy ending". Somehow (it's a plan in progress).

THE BAD

What could or would tempt your character to compromise their principles?

Difficult to say. The red lines are something he's inflexible over. The only thing I could see him sort of compromising on is the betrayal bit, if only because his definition of betrayal may differ from what someone else's is (an example being when he switches side to the protag's faction, technically speaking his contract was concluded with his client, so it wasn't a betrayal to then be hired by his client's enemy, because his loyalty was no longer bought with coin). So, theoretically, he could switch over to Zenith if he felt they offered a chance to bring back Jeralt, but currently his loyalty to Claude and Dimitri are too strong, as well as his delusion that their worlds aren't destroyed, they've just been snatched away and need to find a way back.

Update 26/06: This remains unchanged, Byleth is refreshing in that he will pull dirty tricks or battlefield backstabs if necessary... but he won't betray his friends no matter the circumstances. The problem arises if sticking with a losing Meridian would count as 'betraying' Jeralt by potentially gambling on his life and losing him, and if that'd be enough to have him betray Claude and Dimitri to go to Zenith as a result. It is legitimately something Byleth's been pondering since they've lost the Oracle a second time, but he isn't anywhere near defecting to Zenith just yet. They've only lost one Oracle. There's a chance to turn things around.

Sothis on the other hand will not hesitate to burn multiple bridges for what she perceives to be Byleth's benefit so. Hm.

What do they desire above all else?

He's a pretty simple guy, really. To keep living the mercenary life with his old man, and maybe make friends who can understand him and not be afraid of him, the 'Ashen Demon'. More recently, he's planning on rekindling the current relationship he has with Claude and Dimitri with his own Claude and Dimitri once he returns to his world.

Update 26/06: But he also wants to help his CR in Kenos achieve their desires too - or what he thinks is best for them. He wants Claude to succeed in establishing peace in Kenos, even if Byleth thinks it's impossible personally, he wants Hayame to find a reason to keep on living, he wants to give Set his happy ending, etcetera. Tl;dr he wants everyone to get their happy endings ;w;

What are their biggest fear and/or insecurities?

He's aware that his difficulty in emoting causes people to think of him as emotionless or cold when he's anything but. It's something he's actually pretty insecure over, as he spends time practicing smiling, and even admits to being afraid that Jeralt doesn't realise how much Byleth appreciates him.

More recently, Byleth is realising that he's terrified of being alone and having no one to understand him, though he's not really acknowledging it and just stuffing it down where all his other bad emotions are. The fermenting mental breakdown is something for future Byleth to deal with.

Update 26/06: With Sothis waking back up and her snatching control during the Oracle event, his fear of being trapped have rekindled. Though it was a consensual possession, the sensation of being trapped in your own body, unable to speak or move and feeling something manipulate you, is something he finds deeply uncomfortable and distressing. If he thinks too deeply about the implication of what Rhea was trying to achieve with him, planting Sothis's Crest Stone in his heart, he does get a shiver at the thought of that being his reality forever if her scheme to resurrect Sothis through Byleth had succeeded...

What is this character's worst memory?

Probably when he awakened to Sothis's power and ended up getting possessed by her briefly. He fought against her possession successfully, but was notably jumpy after the fact. Needless to say suddenly finding a goddess bodysurfing you and trying to murder a guy running away from you is probably a very unnerving experience. As such, it's made him twitchy about events where he's at risk of losing control over his body or just losing control of the situation in general.

Sothis, you turned him into a control freak...

Update 26/06: The Oracle event DID NOT HELP THIS. It's just compounded his fear of losing control even more, and now combined with his aimlessness and not sure what he wants or what to do regarding the Meridian/Zenith conflict, it's threatening to fester as a problem later down the road.

Is there anyone they have highly negative feelings towards?

Byleth doesn't really... hate anyone. In Three Hopes we're in the route where Jeralt didn't die, so he's ambivalent towards anyone who isn't Jeralt (who he loves) or his new friends (who he appreciates). Hell, he had no hard feelings against Shez who tried to kill him so, technically the answer is no...

But after Jeralt told him of the true reason why they evade the Church, Byleth probably has a lot of... wariness towards Rhea. He knows that if she ever recognised him, she'd try to get him back as Sothis's vessel, and also because he's technically running around with Sothis's heart which Rhea will definitely want back at some point. While he doesn't hate her, and he isn't afraid of her, exactly, he recognises that she's a major threat to him, and he does make him uneasy in general.

THE ET CETERA

What kinds of gifts does your character like?

HE HAS A CANON FAVE GIFT LIST which is this: fishing float, hunting dagger, whetsone, training weight, owl feather and The History of Fódlan book.

Essentially, anything practical or which helps in his self-improvement. He will, however, enjoy being given books about romance stories or fairy tales, or even myths and legends.

Update 26/06: Romance novels too, the trashier the better. Even the smutty ones...

What item(s) would your character be pleased to receive as a reward?

Again, anything practical. For specific things, maybe vulneraries and elixirs as healing items, another spare cloak in case his gets destroyed in some way (Jeralt bought him his outfit so he'll be sad if it gets irreparably damaged), another sword to act as a back up one... or just food. He eats like a bear preparing for winter hibernation. You can never go wrong with food.

What item(s) would your character never ask for, but you, the player, would want to give them?

I finally remembered... there is something he would never ask for, but would want: Shez's merc whistle. He can be given it by Shez and it deepens their relationship (cough as rivals cough), but it is one of his treasured items.

OOC, what are your goals with this character? What would you enjoy seeing them getting involved in or would enjoy as a potential character arc?

Probably picking up from where he left off in Hopes: learning how to interact with others without having Jeralt there acting as an emotional crutch. As well it'll be interesting seeing how far he'll really go for a chance to return to what is familiar, or if he'll willingly try to move on to something new.

Update 26/06: Byleth is finally entering the stage where he needs to figure out what it is he wants to do with himself. He can't tie his opinions and motivations onto someone else's, he has to decide it and stick with it. This is new grounds for him, though, so it'll be interesting to see where this leads him!
