How far would they go to accomplish their goals or fulfill those desires? Do they have lines they wouldn't cross?
Known in Egyptian historical/religious text as an evil god, if not the evil god, it is record that Set has and will do anything in order to obtain what he wants. Strictly looking at his actions, and not the psychology behind him, he was known for killing his own brother, who was beloved by gods and humanity alike as the one who maintained peace and brought prosperity to the land. Set was said to have killed Osiris solely because he was envious, and wanted the throne of Egypt for himself.
Once on the throne, Set sought to locate and capture his sister, Isis. Again, looking solely at his actions, he had asked her to wed him in order to secure his claim to the throne after killing Osiris; however, she had uncovered his plot and refused him. He imprisoned her in a labyrinth, likely to torment her until she changed her mind, and she escaped with aid from his then-wife, Nephthys. Once Isis vanished into the world, Set angrily pursued her again -- this time, though, any and all women who looked like her and/or reminded him of her, were enslaved, tortured, slaughtered and made to fight for his amusement.
It's safe to say that, though this "Set" is the sinner he's seeking to make amends for -- and had #reasons ( read: psychological and emotional trauma ) for his actions, he was willing to subjugate the other gods, as well as use humans that he was meant to steward and rule fairly, to his own ends. Important, is that he accepts that if he was willing to do such things then -- while suffering trauma and corruption of his divinity -- he doubts he would be unwilling to do such things now, if pushed.
i know this was meant to be "the good", but really, he's a violent god with extremism issues, nothing about what he'd do once fixated is "good" and in terms of his core traits, set is the "chaos" that exists to give "order" its value!
He is dedicated to suffering in the name of penance for his crimes against humanity, though. Despite that he treated humans sadistically and cruelly, Set is determined to empathize with them and accept their pain and hatred unto himself; he bears a curse that assists him with harmonizing with their anguish, and is perfectly willing to experience their agony as if it were his own, to allow them to rest. He would never ask anyone, no matter the faction they belong to, to do anything that he would not do himself. And often, he will do those difficult things on their behalf, whether they want it or not.
What is something they treasure?
Without a doubt, the idea/l of "family" is the greatest concept that he treasures. For countless years, prior to becoming the god of war, Set was a young and free-spirited protector god; he traveled far and wide within Egypt, and even was known to fraternize and spend time in other lands, with other gods from other pantheons. His brother, Osiris, was heartsick that Set spent more time away from Heliopolis than at it, and tasked him with the responsibilities of the god of war at that time.
As Set spent more time confined in Egypt and Heliopolis, settling into his duties, he realized he wanted a family -- he enjoyed the idea of being a father and husband, and was allowed to wed Nephthys, the god of peace. Together, they had Anubis, and were known by gods and humans alike as a picture perfect family! It is without doubt that Set enjoyed the responsibilities of being a good husband and a patient father far more than he did as the god of war, as his warmth and gentleness towards Anubis is recounted by that same son -- only in bitter resentment, as by the time we meet this family, they've been fractured by Set's madness.
Still, while he knows his actions have cost him everything -- the respect of the gods, his power, his marriage, his family, his former status as a benevolent and beloved god, and even his mighty deeds -- he still keeps his promise to Anubis as the most sacred thing he has left. Perhaps the only thing he has left, as his son truly means everything to him. When Anubis's life and soul were threatened by Osiris, Set did everything in his power to protect his son, including giving his body to his brother in trade while vowing he'd never seek the love of family again, if only Anubis would be spared.
he really loves his kid ok
What do they consider to be their best or most positive qualities?
His strength (and his intelligence, but he doesn't boast about THAT)! Even prior to killing Osiris, a fellow god, Set was arguably the most powerful god in the entire Egyptian pantheon. Physically powerful, divinely gifted with the domains of the desert and war, Set was the bastion against which the enemies of Egypt broke themselves time and time again. However, while known for his strength of arm, Set prides himself on his strength of intellect, the lesser-acknowledged element of his strength that has tripped up gods and mortals alike time and time again. He literally says the reason he was undefeated in every war was because he fought the battle with his head, not his might.
Considered a trickster god, Set was able to outmaneuver Osiris and kill him, despite that Osiris, as the god of life, was able to literally deny anyone, including gods, death. To Set, his power is key, but it is his clever and cunning mind and his ability to devise tactics on the fly and not shy away from using underhanded methods that truly make him a strong, mighty god. He does everything as a dominance/power play. C:
What is this character's best memory?
Raising Anubis. Teaching Anubis. Anubis's cat, Simba, and the lessons of life and death. Chariot rides to put Anubis to sleep. Generally, all of his best memories surround the birth and raising of his beloved son. Once Nephthys gave birth to that kid, Set devoted his entire existence towards raising a his child into being a gentle, kind god like his mother -- not like Set, who would always bear the weight of those killed by war and the agony of those who had to live without them.
Is there anyone they have highly positive feelings towards?
CANON
— Isis. Though the two of them are perhaps forever ruined by one another now, he and Isis were best friends and confidants who entrusted themselves to one another, and were both victimized by Osiris for his own ends. While they were in direct competition for the throne, following his abuse of her and her turning her back on him in his time of need, Set continues to reminisce about her during times of vulnerability, thinking of her cleverness and power with distinct, sorrowful love.
— Anubis. He will do anything for this kid, I've said enough.
— Horus. Though the two competed for the throne, Horus had long since indicated that he had no true will to fight his uncle, and should he abandon his crusade against Isis and Egypt, he would serve him wholeheartedly. Set views Horus as the 'perfect, blessed hero' that exists to bring an end to an evil god like him, but has also been routinely surprised that Horus is willing to put his money where his mouth is, and seems to harbor faith in Set's ability to atone. He feels a fledgling respect, and perhaps even camaraderie, towards him.
KENOS
— Hayame. His chosen warrior, whom he seeks the power to bestow appropriate blessings upon. She is a friend to him, despite their volatile relationship, whom he has developed a co-dependency upon due to her validation of his existence as a god and her demands that he become better, stronger and more inspirational.
— Silco. They're soulmates. Pairbonded through the knowledge that they were both betrayed by men they admired and loved, seeking the destruction of all things ( though Set's nuclear option only comes with the caveat of 'endgame spite' ) and comprehension that they are both fathers of children that drive them to extremism.
— Sebastian Michaelis. His punching bag, favorite individual to bully and chosen 'mentor'. He yearns to embody power and prestige among mortals the way that Sebastian does, and has sought his company as teacher and guide through Kenos. He also hopes for ringside seats whenever Hayame and him fight!
— Rudbeckia de Borgia, Liem Talbott & Minegishi Gen. Whom he has come to yearn to stand as bastion for in their times of need.
And also, he has middling feelings towards both Cyrus and Yima. He believes Cyrus is innately good, but naive and could be manipulated. He would like to protect him, and may view him as a bit of a Horus stand-in over time. Yima, he views as an experienced guardian of the truths of Kenos, and has not hesitated nor shied from paying the price for her wisdom.

What could or would tempt your character to compromise their principles?
With a larger-than-life personality and a fragile heart, Set's principles have already been compromised in the past, leaving him a corrupted facsimile of his former glory. He holds his promise with Anubis above all else, and is devoted to righting the damage he caused to the flow of the afterlife in order to return to Heliopolis and try again. In order to compromise himself again, his son or his promise with his son would need to be manipulated -- the webtoon itself presents a consistent challenge to Set, via Osiris and the Foreign God, that they will both take on his burdens (Osiris) or allow him to escape them (FG), if only he "chooses them".
In contrast, Horus serves Set's determination to see his duty through by telling him that he does need to atone, but that Horus will be there at his side throughout the whole ordeal. I believe these three figures serve as a good metaphor for temptation vs. deliverance vs. atonement, which are the three ideals that tempt him the most and could lead him astray. His fear of Osiris could easily be used against him, as a blunt instrument to force him to cower from his principles; escapism isn't as much of a desire of his, save for through hedonism ( sex, drink and drugs ).
He views Meridian as a compromise of his promise to restore the balance of life and death, though Yima's power to give him his son's shard is highly tempting in and of itself. Ultimately, he continues to lean on his promise to his ( amnesiac ) son to keep him on the "straight and narrow" and has bound himself to Meridian's forces as he seeks further information about the truth of their goals and the tenants of their factions.
tl;dr just fuck with his kid and he'll be dragged into all sorts of intense mania
What do they desire above all else?
What he desires above all else is to fulfill his promise to Anubis; that is: to restore the balance of life and death, and return to Heliopolis. Once there, however, his punishment for his crimes continues -- he will be tasked with serving Ra aboard her barque ( wherein he will hunt and kill the world-ending serpent, Apep, for all eternity ).
What are their biggest fear and/or insecurities?
— Osiris. Osiris is the source of many of Set's external and internal conflicts. More powerful, more clever; Osiris is the one who put the seed of doubt in Set's mind about his worth as a man, a god and a father - in an attempt to corner and subdue him before assaulting him.
— Submission. As a victim of sexual assault, Set has been physically and magically forced into submitting to men. Because of this physical contact of any kind has been shown to cause him to lash out, be it physically or verbally, in an attempt to 'resist' being caught and captured in any state of vulnerability, as this has led him into being pressured into making decisions he would not normally make, and using whatever he can to protect others (namely his body).
— Imposter. Set suffers heavily from self-doubt as the result of Osiris's mind-games; he believes without power, he will be vulnerable in the eyes of the rest of the Egyptian pantheon, and they will prey upon him the way that Osiris did. Or worse, simply allow Osiris to have him. He does not wish to be viewed as "less than a man", or vulnerable, only the strongest god of them all. His body is strong and his will is painfully weak.
What is this character's worst memory?
The night Osiris assaulted him. It's the core moment that pushed Set towards corruption and madness, and warped his divinity into what he is now. It affects him like a stranglehold, causing him to doubt himself, cringe towards obscene acts and cruelty, and generally — when other characters in-game deny his godhood or scold him for doing what he was made for, it all reflects back on that night.
Is there anyone they have highly negative feelings towards?
— OSIRIS. He still shamefully loves his brother and is simultaneously utterly terrified of his madness!
— Amos Burton. While he will still communicate with him, he view Amos in the following way: I cannot stand him. He is the antithesis of what it means to be human — no curiosity, no wonder, no questions that he wishes to have asked. He throws away his right to choose, and yields everything he is and could be, just to be a mindless extension of someone else's will. He pretends to want to be alive, but purposefully turns away from everything that would make him so. The guy drives him NUTS!!
THE MATERIAL
What kinds of gifts does your character like?
Gold, incense, statues, shrines, temples, savory drink, war games and performances, ( blood sacrifices no matter what he says otherwise ), vows of service and devotion... The things a god ought to be lavished with, in return for their stewardship and guidance.
What item(s) would your character be pleased to receive as a reward?
While he accepts physical things as gifts, when it comes to rewards he's actually the type of individual who'd rather go anonymous for his deeds. Unrewarded, if anything. Gods are difficult to reward, as they view their work as a requirement of their divinity, rather than something that ought to be rewarded as a human ought to be!
That being said: he'd enjoy 1:1 praise, gains in social prominence and notoriety, servants and adherents assigned to him, opportunities to reach locations or knowledge that's largely denied to others, and the trust of figureheads. He's more of a guy who'd value experiences over things, in terms of rewards!
What item(s) would your character never ask for, but you, the player, would want to give them?
jfc so many things, 'cause he's just not an "item" guy
—
His son's sword, a cursed object that grows heavier the more blood it spills. It's sentimental.HOW DARE YOU— A set of canopic jars, which he would NEVER want but would serve as a chilling reminder of why he became what he did.thanks exalt oracle— Anything that reminds him of his immediate and/or extended family; e.g.
Isis's wings (a cloak), amulets with the symbols of his relatives/made in the style of important signs of Egypt.— Tomes. Full tomes on all sorts of esoteric knowledge, such as war tactics from alien worlds, herbalism texts, self-help books... if he's the last of the Egyptian gods, it means he'll have to shore up on the duties of the others!
— a stuffed animal version of nehebkau the cutest god!! also here is nehebkau-trogdor for you to gaze upon..... :>
— I don't usually ask for pets, since I have a bad habit of forgetting they exist but: a kestrel. Not a falcon, but a fat, fluffy, adorable kestrel. Like this one, which is Actually His Nephew. And/or a pair of pharaoh hounds ( red and black! ), which. Can you see why?
— MAYBE, his sceptre.......
— an umbrella that looks like a head of lettuce,
— s s summer nitocris's outfit— a single sphinge ( real or statue lmf )OOC, what are your goals with this character? What would you enjoy seeing them getting involved in or would enjoy as a potential character arc?
Set's current fixation - derived from canon! - is to break the curse he created, thus allowing the souls of countless women and children to rest and restore the balance of the afterlife. He seeks the restoration of his world in order to keep the promise he made to his son to accept the burden of his crimes and make reparations to the mortals he abused and murdered. I would love to see his goal attained, but at the cost of whatever purity he has left — as Set is also known in mythology as Ba'al, a derivative of the demon Beelzebub.
As of February 2023, he's spoken with Cyrus about his intentions to try and regain his divinity, and we're working on that in social > combat aspects. He's already conceptualized the idea of lavishing his blessings upon others, as a god of war and strife, he thrives off of conflict, disorder and pleasure/hedonism. If possible would like him to become a dark beacon that Springstar needs, but may not desire. He wishes to be the one to do the dirty work, so that others may shine without impunity.
As of June 2023, Set has faithfully continued to work to regain his divinity, and has lent himself to Meridian's forces by supporting Springstar as a deity... and joining himself to the Church, as a continuation of his goals set forth in February 2023. Set will be working to ingratiate himself deeply into the Church on two fronts — to "deepen the strength of Meridian", and to investigate them as an "inside man" while he's at it. He is willing to do whatever they desire, as it will aid his focus on maintaining and upholding balance ( as a chaotic element ), and also enhance him and his position as a god. He wants to get in deep with the Church and uncover their secrets, well before any Zenite does, because controlling the information and knowing whether to support or undermine it for Meridian is KEY VITAL to him. I want him to become worse/corrupted by the Church, what he finds or is asked to do by them, and ultimately take on that dark divine vibe.... #demonindachurch!!!
Lastly, as of July 2023, Set's uncovering of the temple in the north of the Beyond will begin to affirm his need to exact control and promote his presence in the Beyond, perhaps dominating it and/or making it into a base of operations that skews in his ( and Meridian's ) favor the longer that the war goes on. Being able to steadily and slowly develop a foothold so close to Highstorm would be his way to begin to potentially undermine the city + Zenith, as he considers the Beyond, and perhaps Kenos at large something that belongs to him, by right.
