arthas menethil | warcraft

[personal profile] icecrown 2024-05-29 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name(s): Arthas Menethil
Series: Warcraft
Wiki Link: Here

CW: ANIMAL DEATH

THE GOOD

How far would they go to accomplish their goals or fulfil their desires? Do they have lines they wouldn't cross?
As far as it takes, and lol we can mostly blame his horse for this.

When they had the accident that fatally injured Invincible, Arthas was so traumatised by it that he vowed that it would never happen again — he would never be so powerless again. He would never allow innocents to die. He would always be able to make it right. He would do anything and give anything.

Every time Arthas ever had to make a decision that made him question whether or not to keep going, he would think about Invincible and know he had to continue, fearing that others would meet the same fate if he didn't.

There are also no lines that Arthas wouldn't cross, considering he willingly gave his soul to a sword he knew was cursed because he believed it would give him the power to make everything better again.
What is something they treasure?
Invincible! Arthas cared more about that horse than anyone else and pined for the animal for years until he raised it into undeath.

Even when he was rejecting everything and everyone he cared about before he took up Frostmourne, he still treasured Invincible.
What do they consider to be their best or most positive qualities?
Arthas is fiercely devoted to his people and would do anything for them. He thinks of himself as a strong and capable fighter, a brave man of action quick to ensure justice is served.

Uther the Lightbringer would scold him for being "impulsive" and "vengeful" when it comes to his sense of justice, but Arthas thinks that's a dumb opinion and chooses to ignore it.
What is this character's best memory?
Back at it again with another horse answer 🔥🔥

The day Invincible was born. Arthas was present for the birth, and his career as a horsegirl began.

This became a painful memory and then conveniently became a happy one again when he raised Invincible. It's how the book opens and comes up more often than anything else.
Is there anyone they have highly positive feelings towards?
  • Jaina Proudmoore — they dated for a while, and she was on track to be the future queen of Lordaeron until Arthas panicked and broke up with her at the Winter Veil party. Despite considering her refusal to support him during the Culling of Stratholme a betrayal, Arthas continued to love her enough that her memory was a big contribution to his decision to cut his heart out to rid himself of the last of his humanity.

  • Kel'Thuzad — His one good and true Scourge buddy!! Arthas recognised the irony in destroying Quel'thalas to revive Kel'Thuzad after he was the one who had killed him in the first place. Kel'Thuzad never held it against him and even went out of his way to help. Arthas enjoyed their conversations and didn't view him as a minion, even telling Kel'Thuzad that he had been a loyal friend before departing to Northrend.

THE BAD

What could or would tempt your character to compromise their principles?
Presented with a problem Arthas wants a solution for badly enough, he will seek any means to solve it. If he can be convinced that it's the right way, he won't even seek an alternative. His insecurities, coupled with his tendency to obsess, have historically made him surprisingly easy to manipulate.

As it relates to Kenos, he could never be tempted by Meridian, and there is nothing he wouldn't do for Zenith.
What do they desire above all else?
To save and protect his people.

Of course, Arthas took up Frostmourne and proceeded to destroy the entire kingdom of Lordaeron and slay the vast majority of his people before raising them to serve him in undeath in a matter of days, so that did not exactly go as planned.

When he was defeated, he was resigned to the fact that it was over, and his soul was likely doomed to a hellish fate. Things are much different in Kenos, though. He is the last person who deserves to survive his world being consumed by Oblivion, and it's not an opportunity he intends to waste.

Arthas intends to build a new Lordaeron in Zenith's new world that he will always be able to keep under his unyielding protection as an eternal god-king (not that he has thought about it in those exact words, but that's what he's describing).

None are left who know who he is or what he has done, so the Menethil name will live on in good standing when he's one of the heroes who helps lead Zenith to victory.
What are their biggest fear and/or insecurities?
His greatest fear is failure, but many things fit under that umbrella. He is afraid of making mistakes, especially if those mistakes make him a bad king who lets his people down.

He fears rejection so much that he makes Jaina Proudmoore promise never to deny him because he can't stand the thought. At the same time, when Jaina mentions the likelihood that their future children will be fair-haired, he panics and breaks up with her on the spot because he is too afraid of the possibility that he might ruin everything.

Arthas ruining things in the present because he's trying so hard not to potentially ruin them in the future is a common theme for him.

Under duress, these fears heavily clouded his judgement and drove him to the extremes that would lead to his corruption.
What is this character's worst memory?
Wow, another question where the answer is horse.

The memory of that day was worse than any of the horrors Arthas witnessed dealing with the Plague of Undeath because he was actively sad whenever something would remind him of Invincible, and the trauma and guilt of it shaped every other decision he'd make after that.

At one point Jaina noticed and thought it was strange that he wasn't upset at the walking corpses or concerned about how disturbed his men were, but staring at the dead horses on the side of the road. He never dealt with the feelings because he never told anyone what happened and refused to forgive himself for it. Even though Invincible is undead now, if anything happens to him, Arthas experiences the same pain he felt back then until he can repair the damage.
Is there anyone they have highly negative feelings towards?
There is plenty, given the number of enemies he made, but we can call out a few specific names he would still hate seeing around:

  • Sylvanas Windrunner — the former Ranger-General of Quel'thalas when Arthas invaded and the leader of the Forsaken. He killed her and made her suffer just to be petty, naming her the Banshee Queen to be an asshole (and then regretted it). When she regained her freedom, she started on her vengeance quest to kill Arthas.

  • Uther the Lightbringer — Arthas' mentor and superior in the Order of the Silver Hand. Arthas very officially in front of everybody said that paladins were over and he was disbanding the Silver Hand and was shocked when Uther didn't listen. Arthas also declared Uther's refusal to back him in purging Stratholme an act of treason and later killed Uther during King Terenas' funeral procession.

  • Kael'thas Sunstrider — the fallen Prince of the Blood Elves. He and Arthas have a history going back to the days when Jaina Proudmoore was still Archmage Antonidas' apprentice, and he would visit her in Dalaran. Kael'thas also had an interest in Jaina, so he and Arthas considered each other rivals. Later, Arthas would murder Kael's father and destroy his homeland, so things escalated quickly.

THE ET CETERA

What kinds of gifts does your character like?
Arthas doesn't really care much for things, easily abandoning items that should've had sentimental value. In this case, something with sentimental value would be worse because they bring nothing but bad memories (but feel free to hurt him as much as you want lmao).

So, he would prefer practical things that he can use.
What item(s) would your character be pleased to receive as a reward?
As with the gifts, stuff that he can put to use. Weapons would be an easy one. He would also be happy with information or a mission. He is restless when he's idle, so the best thing anyone can do for him is to help him feel like he's moving forward.
What item(s) would your character never ask for, but you, the player, would want to give them?
Another cursed weapon lmao. Especially if it was something that could be worked into a plot to complete over time and has an in-universe purpose because I think that would be extremely cool. It is a Warcraft character.... it should be a quest....
OOC, what are your goals with this character? What would you enjoy seeing them getting involved in or would enjoy as a potential character arc?
It's always tricky for me to answer this question before they're in the game, so as usual, I'll throw what I have at the wall and see what sticks.

Arthas is getting pulled into Kenos right at the moment of his death, expecting "only darkness" and ending up here instead. Suspicious, he is waiting for someone to figure out they made a mistake and send him back to hell where he belongs.

Zenith is an easy choice. He has no reason to ever want to restore what was lost. Nothing is waiting for him back there but a very bad time. He assumes he got pulled here because he has a powerful soul (so humble) and can be useful to someone. Now would be a weird time to start deciding there are lines he won't cross when people are telling him existence is at stake. Sunk-costs and necromancy lol it's weird there are two nickels

Given his history of being manipulated into things, it's likely he will end up at a high tier of Zenith, especially because I am certain Florence or another high-level Zenite will figure out how to push his specific buttons. He doesn't care about conspiracies or cycles because it's all very black and white for him. If Zenith has the Oracles, Zenith will have the power to fix the problem. It's easy. It makes sense! This thinking has never gotten him into trouble before!

He will be highly tempted by the idea of something like redemption in Zenith's new world because it's a clean slate. Who wouldn't want to walk away from it all, especially in a world where no one knew the significance of the name Arthas Menethil?

Arthas is planning to build the New Lordaeron and install himself as its eternally powerful king and protector because this is how he saves his people. Arthas won the cosmic lottery, deserves none of it, and he is not wasting this opportunity. This is how he makes it right.

Also, as I said above, I think it would be cool as hell if he could do some quests to get a cursed weapon! It would be fun to do and hopefully open up opportunities for different CR, especially if it's an "official" task, and different Zenite characters would have a hook to go along. Please feel free to give him horrible consequences if this happens!!!
