Series: Enderal: Forgotten Stories.
Wiki Link: There isn’t really a comprehensive wiki, but I have a basic background write-up here.
THE GOOD
How far would they go to accomplish their goals or fulfill their desires? Do they have lines they wouldn’t cross?
Jade has done a lot of killing in order to get to where she is now, and she also isn’t above slitting throats if she’s given little other choice. If she has to kill people to bring her world back, she’ll fight tooth and nail to make it happen.
As for what lines she wouldn’t cross... she would rather die than to harm a child. And if she meets someone who is or has ever harmed a child regardless of their intentions, she will hold them to the utmost contempt. Innocence is something she greatly values after the horrible way her own little sister had died.
Because she likely sees a bit of herself in these situations, Jade is also usually against killing someone who she suspects is suffering from a mental health crisis, even if they’re begging for her to kill them. If possible, she would much rather find another way to help that person than to “end their suffering” through death.
What is something they treasure?
Love and companionship, even though she’ll never actively admit it. She also cherishes the heirloom Esme had given her before they parted ways, given that she felt a kind of familial fondness towards the young Aeterna woman.
What do they consider to be their best or most positive qualities?
Her adaptability to most circumstances. Sometimes your plans go tits up and you have to improvise, or you could be like her and not have a plan at all and improvise, anyway. Either way, she’s always been pretty good at rolling with the punches and making do with what she has, rather than complain.
She also has a bit of a silver tongue and a sharp wit, able to recognize when she is being scammed or hoodwinked before it happens. If all else fails, choose sarcasm.
What is this character’s best memory?
These are rare, but one particularly happy memory was when she first took her little sister out to explore some of the prettier sights of Ostian together, escaping the chaos that was their home life. The sisters had a very close bond and Jade (still going by the name Jehoel at the time) grew very protective of her younger sibling, oftentimes evoking their father’s ire to so he would be less likely to abuse her sister instead. She wanted nothing more than to give her little sister some moments of peace where they could just be kids for a while. In that memory, they made a promise to leave Nehrim and explore the world together. Obviously did not happen.
Is there anyone they have highly positive feelings towards?
• Jespar Dal’Varek: The first friend she made after washing up on the shores of a new country; Jespar made Jade feel more comfortable through simple acts of kindness, such as initially helping her with her Arcane Fever, offering her little gifts from time to time, and inviting her to scenic places to just hang out and chat. He’s one of the few people she’s opened up to about her nightmares, as he’s had to wake her up screaming on more than one occasion. After she was forced to kill his sister, they had a falling out in which they both said some shitty things to each other, and haven’t spoken again since.
• Calia Sakaresh: One of Jade’s closest friends, and one of the few members of the Holy Order she could tolerate. While Jade was quickly smitten with Calia, it wasn’t until she expressed empathy towards Jade’s religious trauma that she started to really feel affection for the other woman. Much like with Jespar, the feelings eventually started to become romantic – though, also like with Jespar, Calia was quick to shut down Jade’s advances, fearing that the “second soul” that shares her mind would only complicate things. Still, Jade didn’t want to relent, but the two ended up also having a fight which led to them temporarily parting ways for the time being.
• Esme & Rynéus: Jade had big sisterly feelings for them both, from wanting to help Esme find her former companion to being the loving sibling Rynéus so desperately wanted. In different ways, Jade feels that she failed both, with Esme’s search leading her to heartbreak and Jade failing to save Rynéus from Silvergrove. Similarly, the two reminded her of her feelings towards her mother and sister, who she remembers fondly before they were killed.
THE BAD
What could or would tempt your character to compromise their principles?
The bigger picture. Whatever values Jade has can sometimes be set aside if the overall “greater good” is more important to her. Which is why, say, she was begrudgingly willing to work with a religious organization to save the world from an apocalyptic event, despite being an athiest who despises everything said organization stood for (though it didn’t come without reservations. Jade was very keen to abandon her “responsibilities” and flee the country at first, and only came back when her plans fell through).
What do they desire above all else?
Freedom. When all is said and done, she wants to be able to say that the choices she made in the end were hers, and not orchestrated by some cosmic joke guiding her to repeat the same mistakes as the thousands of Prophets from the Cycles before hers. Moreover, she wishes for catharsis – to be free from the pain of her own past and to find some semblance of peace someday, be it in death or, preferrably, a new life.
What are their biggest fear and/or insecurities?
While she has a deep fear of fire and deep water (particularly drowning), her greatest fear is insanity – she constantly questions her perception of reality and whether or not this all is just a fever dream of her dying consciousness after being left to drown in the Red Sea. It helps very little that she already had a predisposition for madness as a byproduct of her trauma and abuse.
What is this character’s worst memory?
The night her family was killed by the “masked men” from the Creator’s Temple, over 20 years ago. Long story short: Jade blames herself for this – so much so, it’s a frequent theme in her night terrors. She was the one who led the cultists to her family’s farm when trying to find help for her mother and sister. Upon discovering that the family had participated in the act of cannibalism during a bout of famine, they were immediately executed. She was around 9 years old when this happened, and while she managed to escape, she sustained severe burns on a good portion of the left side of her body.
Is there anyone they have highly negative feelings towards?
• Daddy: Having believed that his wife was unfaithful, Jade’s father justified his abuse as “the Creator’s will” and made her childhood a living nightmare. Now long dead, he haunts them instead – not all of her nightmares, mind you, but most feature him in the varying ways he made her feel small, weak, insignificant, and worthless. His physical and emotional abuse led to lifelong trauma and self-hatred that she still grapples with.
• Tealor Arantheal: With how much of her life had been negatively impacted by religion, she hates the Order and everything they stand for. Her first instinct upon meeting Grandmaster Arantheal and learning about the end of the world was to put as much distance between herself and them as soon as possible. Of course, those plans fell through and she had little choice but to offer her “gifts” in order to stop the Cycle. Over time her resentment towards Arantheal grew, finding the Grandmaster to be arrogant, thinking himself to be more important than everyone else, and his role as an Emissary (the Emperor who the Prophet is supposed to aid) only fed into his sense of pride and superiority. I often joke that just about everyone in Enderal has daddy issues; but in Tealor’s case, he is the daddy issue.
• Tharaêl Narys: One of her deepest regrets. To say that their relationship was turbulent would be an understatement. The only reason she agreed to work with such a contemptuous man was because she found the cause to be more important – and that was to kill the leader of the Undercity cult, who had experimented on and murdered many urchin children like Tharaêl himself. But when their mission failed, she could not bring herself to tell him the words that could have saved his life. It is a moment that still haunts her long after his death. They were not much different, in the end, but her silence was his death knell.
THE ET CETERA
What kinds of gifts does your character like?
• Anything that might have sentimental value, or may have made that person think of her when giving her that gift.
• Comfortable clothes.
• Quality alcohol (wine or brandy) and a good pipe to smoke with.
• Date cakes or other similar treats. She could never afford fancy foods or sweets before, but she loves them now (even though she has a date allergy she has not yet fully acknowledged. She will suffer).
• Books (either an interesting fiction/nonfiction story, or something she can learn new things from).
• Jewelry (rings, earrings, necklaces, chokers, bracers).
What item(s) would your character be pleased to receive as a reward?
• One of her Phasmalist talismans. She arrived without them, so she can’t summon any of the souls she’d bound to them at the moment. The main ones she used were Denna Frostheart (Tier III Mage), Kilana Hammerblow (Tier IV Mercenary), and the Aeterna Ambassador (Tier IV Ranger). However, having known Zar’Ah (Tier IV Warrior) very briefly when she was alive and saving her soul from being trapped in a fleshy macabre temple where she died, Jade feels more connected to this particular soul for some time now. I’m not too certain if she would be allowed, but as I mentioned on my Phasmalism info, most of the ghosts would not be considered appable characters, but I’ll leave the curious case of Zar’Ah up to mod discretion).
• Rynéus’ necklace (though this is also a Black Stone, so not sure if it would still be powered or not as it is also kind of implied that the Black Stones contain souls).
• A good batch of petals she can smoke to cope with that Arcane Fever (Peaceweed, Kiléan sweetwater tobacco, Purple Myrad for the quality shit).
• Ambrosia also helps the Fever as well (more efficiently than Peaceweed, but the potion tastes like ass so it’s less fun. But still. Thanks?).
• Soul Gems that she can use to power some enchantments. Preferably already filled, but probably nothing bigger than what can contain the souls of monsters if empty.
• Fancy sharp daggers.
What item(s) would your character never ask for, but you, the player, would want to give them?
• A (hopefully clean) copy of Lyrical Gushes and other Fluids and/or King Lewd and the Maidservant Devotia.
• The Butcher of Ark because we do love some banned books in this house.
• That horrific painting of Saturn Devouring His Son because what the fuck, fam.
OOC, what are your goals with this character? What would you enjoy seeing them getting involved in or would enjoy as a potential character arc?
• I would love for her to develop bonds with others who share similar experiences with her. Being able to make herself useful by carrying out small acts of kindness while figuring out how to accept the kindness of others in return. Knowing that the fate of this war impacts her own world will also motivate her to form attachments and camaraderie.
• Learning to love herself a little more and tackle her deeper issues, which is easier said than done. There’s a lot of unpacked trauma and stuff that never gets dealt with on-screen (due to the nature of fade-to-black roleplaying bits you’re given in the game instead), and I would love to incorporate those more into her interactions with others.
• Finally processing that she’s probably very likely a walking dead person. There’ve been enough hints by her canon point for her to suspect as much already, and while that much is half-true, there are still some truths about her “resurrection” that she never gets to properly explore before the end of the game as it is.
