CHARACTER DEATHS

When a character's body suffers fatal damage, they dissipate around their Shards - but as long as the Shards themselves are not destroyed, a Shard-Bearer will return to life. In order for this regenerative process to take place, however, Shards must be brought to the Tree of Life - a place to which all Bearers are innately connected. (This knowledge is well-known by all Bearers in both Highstorm and Springstar, and thus you can handwave how your character came about the details.)

A Bearer's Shard must be placed near the Tree's base; it will slowly sink into the earth until buried. Over the course of the next 5-7 days (your OOC choosing), a cocoon of moss, roots, and soil will begin to emerge from the ground - and as long as the Shard held within is not disturbed, the Bearer will regenerate and revive from within. Once the process is complete, they will 'hatch' from their cocoon like a newborn birdling - with or without outside assistance. They will find themselves weak and generally unwell for the next few days; the time of their recovery is up to you. Whether they bear scars or permanent disfiguration as a result of damage suffered prior to dissipation is up to you.

When Silco comes to, he’ll find himself encased in a cocoon. The cocoon is filled with the same familiar sap that the sarcophagi in Yima’s basement had been, just up to Silco’s neck. Resting along the top of the sap are thin, swirling vines that have snaked along its surface to have also wrapped lightly around Silco’s neck multiple times. They’re thin and easily removed, but their presence does feel intentional.

The thin material of the cocoon isn’t difficult to break through, but it still feels like a great effort because of how weak he feels. It’s as if he’s been doing days of strenuous activity, and the feeling will linger along with general body aches and chills for the next few days as his body demands rest and recovery.

It’s a process that’s surprisingly quiet, like waking from a pleasantly long nap. And during that process, there are flickerings across her consciousness. Not all of them will be remembered, since they’re the sorts of dreams that are on the tip of your tongue, but one stands out a bit more.

She’s standing at the Tree of Life, looking up at the endless sea of stars that surrounds it, when someone steps up to join her. Gently, they place a gloved hand on her shoulder, and their one eye is full of sympathy and sorrow. They immediately feel familiar as one soul touches another. This is the person whose soul had been trapped within the creature.

“I’m so sorry,” they say first, and it feels like they could repeat that phrase endlessly and still not feel like it was enough.

“It’s not much as an apology, but… I’m still alive. For now, at least. I have you to thank for that in part,” he admits, and then draws his hand away gently. “Dunno if it’s even useful to you. But let me share a place with you. You might find something down there that’ll help you. Just, uh, stay away from Ryad is my advice.”

His presence fades not long after that, since he doesn’t seem able to hold this strange form of Communion long… But when Rosaria awakes and frees herself from her sap-filled cocoon, she’ll have some new knowledge imparted to her. It seems as Manon’s gift, she’ll now find herself possessing the knowledge of how to safely navigate to a a strange, new place, should she wish to do so.

Manon shakes his head as he withdraws his hand. He seems lost in thought for a moment as he looks down at his feet, but his eye comes back up to meet Liem’s without too much delay.

“This isn’t an easy connection to maintain, so let me just give you two things, since I- Well, I don’t know what’ll happen to me. One, I hope you got the image of the guy that was… I don’t know what he was doing, exactly. But my Shard got mixed up with a bunch of others. That’s the best I’ve got for that. But I heard someone else call him ‘Aetós’,” he says, then clicks his tongue. The connection is fading, so he pushes an image forward into Liem’s mind. A cache. “And you were using a knife, so go grab one of mine, if you want. Might be handy.”

His presence fades not long after that, since he doesn’t seem able to hold this strange form of Communion long… But when Liem awakes and frees himself from his sap-filled cocoon, he’ll have some new knowledge imparted to him. He can easily navigate to a place in the residential district of Springstar where he’ll find a fine dagger hidden behind some neatly displaced bricks that make a cavity. Let us know if Liem takes the dagger, and we’ll explain its further properties!

Yes, Liem will for sure go looking for this mysterious dead guy dagger! He'll wait until after he's returned his loaned equipment to Highstorm and delivered Manon's shard with Hayame, but he will absolutely seek it out after that.

Liem will find a finely made, dark-colored dagger (its appearance otherwise is up to you), which has two unique properties:
1) While the dagger is anything but direct sunlight, its blade stays razor-sharp without maintenance. When in direct sunlight, it's a normal blade's edge, so still perfectly capable of doing whatever you might need a dagger for, but it may take more force.
2) When thrown (or discarded/disarmed/etc), Liem can immediately recall it to his possession. The blade will simply teleport back to his hand or its sheathe so long as he can still see what the dagger was thrown at.

These properties aren't obvious by looking at the dagger, but you can have him discover it how you'd like/is more interesting to play with! It could be accidental, it could come to him in a dream, etc.

How they died: Asked Silco to shimmer him so he could go HAM in Ryad for a little bit while trying to figure out his berserker condition. It failed because this was only his second time entering that state. Had to get taken out/torn apart/exsaguinated/etc. by creatures in Ryad to get him to stop, but he was kinda expecting that.

Seeing as how Reigen was frozen as a statue on the Scorching Isle, his experience is going to be a bit less conventional than normal! He remembers being still, very still - completely locked inside of himself but still able to feel, still able to think. He gets hungry; he gets tired. He has an itch he can't scratch. So thirsty... It takes hours... days, maybe, for him to realize he's getting colder on top of everything else. Like suffering from hypothermia in a frozen husk, he slowly loses feeling of his body until, eventually... he loses his sense of being entirely and has died.

Since his Shard was inaccessible to others in the Kaleidoscope, the only person capable of helping Reigen is Mr. Tibbs. One might think this is a big fat RIP for Mr. Arataka, considering the wide variety of statues Mr. Tibbs has in his 'collection,' but oddly enough, Reigen will find his Shard plucked out of his frozen corpse, the memory of what happens next like recalling a surreal dream. He remembers the initial contact being some kind of relief after floating in an overwhelming nothingness - the connection to another living thing most likely being reassuring, but that wouldn't last long. (Where had he been before that? He doesn't even know for sure.) After a too-short respite from drowning in that sea of nothingness (what sea of nothingness?), he knows emptiness again.

Reigen reforms in a Seed just beneath the surface soil at the Tree of Life which is soft and malleable, not difficult to crawl from. He awakens feeling groggy and weak, something that will follow him for a day or two and will require him to rest to recuperate. Alongside this, he remembers two things:

Being buried (as a Shard) beneath the Tree on the Scorching Island by Mr. Tibbs, who covers him over and whispers softly to this 'grave,' You're too much like him for your own good.

Brief, snapshot-like recollections of his time afloat somewhere he cannot put to words. Thinking of this time period is extremely disorienting, and the longer he focuses on it, the more strain it puts on him mentally. If he keeps it up too long, he'll develop a migraine and may pass out.

He remembers being watched.

He didn't like being watched.

He will be free to leave the Tree of Life, which is as calming and warm a place as ever! Wow, haha, like that whole thing didn't even happen! Except it did, so good job with your pinch of Sand, bud.

Reigen will wake shortly after the event's conclusion, so please check there for the state of things come the 31st!

How they died: MASSIVELY backdated but despite the thread I believe stalling out it's still close enough... When Vander went berserk prior to Aetós kidnapping him, Amos deliberately put himself in position to also go berserk in order to try to contain him. Which obviously ended up meaning nothing since Aetós removed the Vander problem, but then Childe and Dimitri had to kill Amos anyway. I'm not sure how! It was probably brutal though.

It's largely like the last time he's been through this (Amos needs to get the equivalent of frequent flier miles at this rate), peaceful and uneventful despite the violence of how he’d ended up here. However, there is one thing that he’ll remember, if only faintly. It’s an out of body experience, quite literally, as he doesn’t seem to have a body at all. There’s a teal-colored light that he can perceive, and it’s bright enough (or maybe he’s just not able to see?) to muddy details of the single thing he remembers seeing. A silver hand reaches out, not for him, but for something else. He can’t see what it ends up grabbing, but he can see the silver of the hand seem to “rust” within the light as if rapidly degrading and aging. But that’s all.

As he rests and regrows, it's not a peaceful process, however. A cold settles deep into him, and it's as if he'll never feel warm again, he feels. There's something wrong, something rotten, and there's nothing that seems to alleviate how it wraps around him. He'll remember having dreams and nightmares both, but most are indistinct and unable to be recalled other than a sense of discontent.

However, there is one that sticks out.

Link lays underneath the Tree of Life, unable to move as he looks up at its great branches. However, the beauty of it is gone. Dying. Leaves fall like rain as they rapidly fall from the great branches. The Tree is dying in his dream. The bark is rotting, and dark spotted lichen spreads across the roots. He tries to reach out and brush away the lichen as it spreads, but its as if a force stays his hand with warmth. He’s not sure how, but he knows for a moment that something is protecting him… And the Tree suffers for it.
